I Love West Leeds Festival 2010: Prepartions underway - Leeds Festival Tickets

Organisers of this year's I Love West Leeds festival have picked the mammoth river-dwelling creatures as their mascot for this year's event. And they are hoping to be swamped with volunteers to get hippo-happy and help create hundreds of plaster models of the animals. The models will then be distributed to schoolchildren across west Leeds to be painted and decorated. And they will also form part of a fun Armley Hippo Trail to be featured at the festival.
I Love West Leeds organiser Jane Earnshaw – whose previous themes for the annual event have included a completely knitted woollen wonderland and decorated underpants – explained the reason behind this year's choice of mascot. "A prehistoric hippo was discovered in a quarry in Armley in 1851.
"We have called (the mascot) Denny after Henry Denny, the curator who identified the hippo bones in 1851."
To create 'Denny', a special rubber hippo mould was made for the festival by Chris Gauntley, a student at Leeds College of Art and Design.  Ms Earnshaw now has 10 rubber hippo moulds at the ready and is on the lookout for a team of volunteers to help create hundreds of little Dennys.
"We need an army of helpers to come and mix plaster and fill them over and over again until we have hundreds of hippos," she explained. "You don't need any skills at all except the ability to put plaster into water from a scoop and then mix it with your hands (rubber gloves provided) until it's like cream, then pour your lovely mix into the waiting moulds.

"Put the moulds on the drying racks and then you can go home. It's very funny when we take them out of the moulds – its a bit like being James Herriot!"

Ms Earnshaw wants volunteers to sign up to help for around two hours each.

Three sessions will be running daily for the next four weeks at 9am, 11.30am and 2pm Monday to Saturday.

On Sundays, the sessions will be running at 1pm and 3pm. Volunteers are asked to bring a change of clothes.

Reading And Leeds Organisers To Stage Third Festival Abroad?

Reading and Leeds festival organisers are considering launching a third site abroad, it’s been reported. Promotor Melvin Benn said it was “dream” to expand the event, although ruled out taking it to an exotic location.
“We may well develop a site but probably not in the UK, “ he told the Daily Star. “It’s more than a dream but I can’t say where it will be. I’d like maybe to set it up for next year.” When asked if the festival would take place in a warm climate, he replied: “There’s no point in taking Reading and Leeds to an exotic location.

"It needs to be somewhere appropriate and exotic wouldn’t be appropriate.”

Festival Fortnight: Live at Leeds

As part of the Festival Fortnight series, Sam Clements blogs about his experience at the 2010 Live at Leeds festival which took place April 30th to May 3th.
With copious amounts of beer, bands and something else beginning with “B”, which I can’t think of right now, Live at Leeds is one of the best ways to begin the summer and start off the festival season.
Like most festivals, the worst bit is having to choose between which bands to see. Live at Leeds Festival has this problem in a different way though – as it is set in different venues dotted all around the city, once you make a decision, you pretty much have to stick to it.
So with warm weather: check, sunglasses: check, and four mates: check, all was in order for a great day. Despite it being a relatively small festival on the calendar, at the bargain price of £15 to see headline acts like Wild Beasts, The Drums Hadouken, 65 Days of Static, The Sunshine Underground, Blood Red Shoes, and Lightspeed Champion it was impossible to turn down.
Rolo Tomassi were the first band we saw at the Cockpit venue. It was all a bit too early in the day for a screamo synth band and having never heard them before, they seemed like a bit of a poor man’s HORSE The Band.
Having said that, they gave it their all and were really lively – especially as it’s always entertaining to watch a female vocalist produce sounds that only an animal or fictional monster should make.
The hardcore fans at the front were in awe and the slightly more subdued crowd could only watch with respect at the band’s jumping and hair swinging – their enthusiasm was really impressive.
Lightspeed Champion was next, playing at Leeds University, drawing a full crowd that spilled out of the venue although many were left disappointed by their forgetful performance.
To ensure prime positions to see Blood Red Shoes, we had to put ourselves through The Bronx and Wolfgang. A full set of The Bronx’s pop hardcore music was a surprisingly brilliant live experience, full of energy, which was pretty much responsible for the continuous moshing and circle pit, which I can’t deny I got involved with.
Wolfgang provided some of the most generic pop indie music to date, with a wardrobe of outfits to match. With them, they brought a sea of squealing girls, who unfortunately stayed for the prime reason I had gone to Live at Leeds – Blood Red Shoes.
I was apprehensive that the Brighton two piece would fall flat with their limited instrument presence, but they filled the hall so well. Especially impressive was Steven Ansell, who simultaneously was drumming and singing and really brought the performance together. Playing a lot of old favourites and their two most recent singles, the duo was never a note out of place.
We didn’t get to see The Sunshine Underground, being just that little bit too late to the venue. You’re not guaranteed to see every band you want, especially headliners, and considering the day I had, it was impossible to be disappointed.
Live at Leeds offered a great diverse music selection and a full day and evening’s entertainment. It’s definitely something to stick in the calendar for next year.

Reading, Leeds to launch third site abroad?

Reading and Leeds Festival bosses are understood to be considering the idea of launching a third site abroad.

The event's organiser Melvin Benn declared that it is his "dream" to expand the bash, which introduced the Leeds venue in 1999 having been solely held in Reading since the early '70s. "We may well develop a site but probably not in the UK," he told the Daily Star. "It's more than a dream but I can't say where it will be. I'd like maybe to set it up for next year." When asked if the festival could be heading for a sunnier climate, he answered: "There's no point in taking Reading and Leeds to an exotic location. "It needs to be somewhere appropriate and exotic wouldn't be appropriate."

This year's Reading and Leeds Festivals - headlined by Guns N' Roses, Arcade Fire and Blink-182 - will be held from August 27 to August 29.

Leeds today - binge drinking, schools and morris dancers

Hope you had a good bank holiday weekend. There's a busy week ahead, at the end of which we'll find out who's going to be running the country, who's going to be running Leeds council and, perhaps more importantly depending on your perspective, will Leeds United finally win automatic promotion?
The Friends of Kirkgate Market start planning their future strategy to help save the market tonight at 5.30pm at the Victoria Pub in Great George Street. All welcome to attend. Later today, I'll be running a full preview of the Leeds council elections on Thursday. Speaking of elections, there's a real political hoo-ha of the future of the West Park Centre in North West Leeds, which I'll be filing copy on shortly. And you can also pin down the green aspirations of prospective parliamentary candidates in all Leeds constituencies thanks to an online initiative run by coalition of green groups in Leeds. Full story to follow. Oh, and in case you hadn't noticed, there's a general (and local) election this week! Energy efficiency and water saving could be on the curriculum for University of Leeds students at the newly unveiled £23m School of Earth and Environment building, reports Big Green Smile.com.
Harewood has once again proved why it is one of the area's most popular visitor attractions, as its 100 acres of stunning gardens are voted the top in a national competition to find the UK's favourite gardens to visit by BBC Gardner's World magazine.

Reading & Leeds Festivals have warned fans that a ream of fake ticket

The organisers of the Reading & Leeds Festivals have warned fans that a ream of fake ticket sites have popped up on the internet. The festival has had trouble with fake websites in the past, and this year they have already taken down two website that were offering tickets under the guise of being official outlets, but were actually just websites stealing people’s information. "It has been widely reported that there are many fake sites for all this summer's festivals," Festival Republic said in a statement "This particular scam involves people registering for free tickets and is essentially a third party phishing personal information such as email addresses."
Organisers are urging people searching for tickets to only use official outlets and not to try to find tickets in potentially damaging places. The festivals are due to be headlined byGuns N RosesBlink 182 and Arcade Fireand take place on the weekend of 27-29 August. Buy Leeds Festival Tickets 2010 or Sell Leeds Festival Tickets 2010 through YourTicketMarket.com One stop shop to catch your favourite event Tickets like Leeds Festival Tickets 2010, Guaranteed, Fast and Secure!

FESTIVAL REPUBLIC WARN FANS BUYING LEEDS & READING FESTIVAL TICKETS

Festival Republic, the company behind both Reading and Leeds Festivals have again issued a plea to music fans to beware of scam sites and bogus facebook groups. With the festival tickets season now in full swing, and some of the major UK festivals such as Reading Festival, Leeds Festival, T in the Park and V Festival already sold out - organisers are urging fans to be on full alert when purchasing tickets and to avoid being scammed by unscrupulous con-men. In the past week alone two facebook groups have been shut-down after being setup offering non-existent free tickets. The groups were used instead to harvest user data, such as email addresses, for phishing attacks, and directing unsuspecting music fans to bogus websites to purchase tickets. Tickets, which of course, do not exist. In a statement, Festival Republic says, "Please do not register with any third party claiming to represent Reading and Leeds Festival, if you are unsure please call the information line 0207 009 3001." In an effort to ensure fans don't get scammed, Festival Republic have partnered with ticket exchange site Viagogo to be it's official ticket exchange partner for Reading, Leeds and Latitude Festivals in 2010. "Viagogo has helped us all but eliminate the issues that we have had in the past with fans taking their chances online and being disappointed after ‘buying’ non-existent resale tickets," said Melvin Benn, Managing Director of Festival Republic.  “We are working with Viagogo again this year as the only recommended and official ticket exchange for the Reading, Leeds, and Latitude festivals.”
Ed Parkinson, Director of Viagogo UK added: "We are delighted to be working with Festival Republic again in 2010. We are committed to helping the festival organisers provide a safe and secure place for their fans to buy and sell tickets and protect them from rogue websites and online scams.” Stereoboard.com advises fans wishing to purchase tickets for any of the summer festivals, or sold out concerts, to use our safe comparison service, which compare tickets from credible and guaranteed sources - ensuring fans are not left out of pocket by scammers.
